A PROJECTOR

Communication, Computing, and Technology in Education (CCTE) Program provides a cluster of degree programs for students seeking to develop leadership capacities in the use of information and communication technologies in education and society.

PROJECTOR
Is an optical device in which a strip of film is wound past a lens at a fixed speed so that the frames can be viewed as a continuously moving sequence on a screen or wall

Projector Types

In today’s modern world, it offers a broad selection of projectors. Whatever your need for using one, you would have to do a lot of research about the different types out there. Here are just a few different types of projectors and a brief description on what each one is used for.

Slide

Slide projectors were commonly used as a form of entertainment in the 1950s and 1960s.
Slide projectors are still used even though there has been more advanced technology over the years. The slide projectors are usable and convenient devices that use photographic slides to display images on a screen or wall.
The new slide projectors have small built in screens or walls enabling instant and portable viewing. You can view any kind of presentation any where and you have a choice of slide projectors e.g. carousel projectors, dual slide projectors and single projectors.
Now the slide projector has been replaced digital cameras, video/DVD players, televisions etc. There is a slow decline in purchasing a slide projector as the manufacturers have stopped producing them.

 

 

 

LCD

LCD projectors are lightweight and portable; they provide very good quality images, you may want to think about getting an LCD projector depending on your usage. Digital LCD projectors are normally used for places such as the cinema, exhibitions, or advertising etc.
The LCD projectors are the modern versions of overhead and slide projectors. But are smaller and project images to nearly any flat surface. This is the most widely used projector with the ability to transmit high definition pictures with high pixel density.

DLP

DLP technology is reasonably priced for the home, business and schools. They are good, lightweight projectors which you can just plug in and start using straight away.

Digital Projector

A digital projector is a computer display system that displays enlarged image on a movie screen. The digital projector can be used in a program that helps to view 3d, interactive PowerPoint presentations, and mp3 movies from a computer/laptop.
These projectors are commonly used in lecture theatres i.e. universities, conference centres etc. for doing presentations

FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A PROJECTOR(S)
You as a teacher, before you buy a projector you’re supposed to consider the following factors

Projector Brightness

Brightness is measured in ANSI (American National Standards Institute) lumens: the higher the ANSI lumens level, the brighter the projector.
So how bright should your projector be? First you need to consider the following factors
:

Projector Resolution

The resolution is the number of pixels that make up an image - e.g. 800 x 600 means the picture is made of 800 columns of pixels by 600 rows of pixels; for a total of 480.000 (800x600) pixels making up the whole image. The larger the number of pixels the higher the resolution and the sharper and more detailed the image is.
When comparing projectors, we are comparing their native resolution: most projectors are compatible with higher source resolution through the use of compression technology, but the native resolution is the actual number of physical pixels.

 

 

Projector Aspect Ratio

The aspect ratio is the ratio of the width of an image to its height.
Projectors are divided between 4:3 (computer monitor shape) and 16:9 (widescreen TV shape) aspect ratios.
The 4:3 projectors are mainly used for business purposes to use with a computer.
The 16:9 projectors are used for home cinema or to project DVDs.
There is also a 16:10 aspect ratio seen in widescreen business projectors. These projectors have been designed for use with widescreen computers, although they are also used by home users.
Most projectors, whether they are 4:3, 16:10 or 16:9, are compatible with other aspect ratios. A simple option in the projector menu will switch the picture between formats. It is however not recommended to use a projector in a format other than its native aspect ratio as it will stretch the image or it will miss parts of the picture.

Projector Weight

The more advanced and powerful the projector, the heavier it is.

If you are planning on using your projector on the road, you might need to consider its weight. A lighter, more portable machine around 1 - 2 kg would be more suitable.

If you don't intend to move the projector a lot but still want the option or it is more important to have a more powerful projector, you can look at projectors between 2 and 5 kg.

If your projector is going to be installed, the weight is not an issue and you should ignore it and concentrate on other cost or performance factors.





Note; there are some factors to consider when using a projector in the classroom, these are,
  • Nature of the learners (age and ability).
  • Size of the class
  • Nature of the subject matter
  • Coverage of material(to what extent you want cover the materials in a short period of time)
